Ingredients

Ingredients

  • Shaved Ice – shaved ice from a Shaved Ice Maker.
  • Matcha Powder – green tea leaves that have been ground into a powder. Culinary grade Matcha Powder will work for this recipe but you can also use ceremonial grade premium matcha if preferred.
  • Hot Water – filtered hot water.
  • Sweetener –  use your preferred sweetener.

Additional Toppings

Feel free to top with some Matcha Condensed Milk, mochi, red bean paste or sweet red beans for a full Japanese style ujikintoki dessert!

🍵 Matcha Note

For this recipe, I recommend using Culinary Grade Matcha. It offers great taste at a more affordable price than ceremonial matcha.

Essential Kitchen Equipment

Directions

Step 1 In a small mixing bowl, combine matcha powder with hot water until dissolved.

Step 2 In a separate mixing bowl, combine your sweetener of choice and hot water until dissolved to form your simple syrup.

Step 3 Combine the together, whisk, and let it cool down. Once the matcha syrup is cooled, pour it onto shaved ice.

🧊 Cooling Pro Tip

To speed up the cooling process of the syrup, I recommend placing it in the Refrigerator for 10-15 Minutes.

Pairing Recommendations

For a complete and refreshing matcha experience, consider pairing this delightful shaved ice treat with other matcha-style beverages, such as my Iced Matcha Latte or Strawberry Matcha Latte.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make the syrup in advance and store it?

Yes, you can definitely make the syrup in advance and store it for later use. Just make use to give it a quick stir before serving as settling may occur.

Can I make this recipe without an ice shaver?

To make this recipe, it's best to use an ice shaver to achieve the perfect texture of shaved ice. While you could try using a crushed ice option on a refrigerator in a pinch, it won't produce the same results as using a dedicated ice shaver.

Storage Tips

While this treat is best enjoyed freshly made, leftovers can be stored in the freezer. Just make note that the texture may be altered as the ice clumps begin to stick together over time.
