Why I Love This Recipe
I’m absolutely in love with my Spam Musubi Sauce because it’s the perfect blend of sweet and savory, designed specifically to add that extra flavor to my Hawaiian Spam Musubi, Spam Musubi with Eggs and Air Fried Spam Musubi! Handcrafted in my own kitchen after many different variations, this sauce is my own creation, inspired by my popular Spam Musubi in a Bowl and Spam Egg Rice Bowl!
Starting with my signature Teriyaki Sauce base, I’ve fine-tuned the flavor profile to perfectly complement the flavors of spam. Simply simmer the ingredients in a saucepan until thickened, let it cool, then brush it onto your musubi—it’s as easy as that! If you’re craving a burst of flavor in every bite, this sauce is a game-changer. Trust me, once you try it, you’ll never want to make spam musubi without it again!
Ingredients
Ingredients
- Garlic – freshly grated garlic. Used to provide the extra flavor in the sauce.
- Japanese Sake – typically will come in a large bottle labeled junmai sake. Can also substitute with dry sherry wine or Chinese cooking wine, found at local grocery stores or Asian markets. Helps round out the flavor of the sauce.
- Sweetener – use your preferred sweetener.
- Soy Sauce – low-sodium Soy Sauce preferred. Can also use tamari for gluten-free. Used as the base falvor for the musubi sauce.
- Thickener – corn starch slurry or thickener of choice.
Directions
Step 1 Combine corn starch and water in a mixing bowl to prepare your corn starch slurry.
Step 2 In a large skillet over medium heat, mix Japanese sake, soy sauce, grated garlic, and sweetener. Let the sauce come to a gentle boil, then lower the heat to simmer. Stir in the corn starch slurry and simmer until the sauce thickens, about 30-45 seconds.
Step 3 Transfer your sauce to a holding bowl. When ready to use on your spam musubi, use a brush to brush over sliced spam.
Pairing Recommendations
This sauce isn’t just for my  Hawaiian Spam Musubi or my Air Fried Spam Musubi —it’s perfect for our Spam Fried Rice or even my Spam Sushi Rolls! The sweet and savory flavors blend beautifully with the rice and spam, creating a dish that’s simply irresistible! You also could use to sauce paired with my Teriyaki Spam Plate too!
